Here is a great example of how better network telecom inventory management and network optimization can go hand in hand to generate significant cost savings for next-generation service providers.

The Cloud Age Solutions team was approached by a large data and voice network operator that had just acquired a large CLEC.  The CLEC they had acquired was the result of the merger of 3 different CLECs – a lot of system complexity. The new owner wanted to determine how the CLEC’s three networks could be optimized, after a long period of underinvestment.

As we do in many engagements, the first step in the process is to create a consolidated and easy-to-analyze view of the CLECs network assets and resulting costs.  Using the network inventory control module within Cloud Age Solutions’ gpxcloud software platform, we loaded the client’s CABS billing data and network asset (colos, fiber, etc.) data into the module. During this process, the CABS and inventory data was cleansed to better understand its contents.

The CLEC network was further broken down into several components (loops, transport, interconnection) in order to understand how each was configured. Leveraging Cloud Age Solutions’ knowledge of telecom access networks, we identified multiple optimization opportunities:

  • On-net conversions (i.e. migrating off of leased facilities to CLEC’s own fiber)
  • ILEC hubbing (i.e. migrating DS1 transport circuits onto ILEC UNE DS3 transport)
  • ILEC co-mingling (i.e. leveraging UNE transport for both special and UNE circuits)
  • CLEC transport/loop (i.e. leveraging CLECs for transport/loop where the customer is in a CLEC lit building)

What made these opportunities possible was having the relevant data presented in a way that made it easy for our network optimization experts to do the analysis.  Over an 8 month period, Cloud Age Solutions helped our customer generate annualized savings greater than $5M – and streamlined their entire telecom network inventory management process.
